Itchy Horse, Wheezy Horse?

Updated: May 26, 2020

Consider equine skin testing with our visiting dermatologist, Dr John Hutt from Dermatology for Animals!

Recently, Dr Hutt did skin testing on a thoroughbred which has been suffering with chronic skin disease. Skin testing allows for accurate identification of specific allergens which each individual animal is reacting to. The procedure is done under sedation and takes about 30 minutes. Once the allergens are identified, a unique vaccine is made tailored to the needs of each horse. Over a 6 month period, the owner administers the vaccine at home 2-3 times weekly. In 70% of cases horses have an excellent response.

Skin testing is useful not only for skin disease but also for those horses with respiratory disease, such as equine asthma, where allergies are a major trigger for symptoms.
